Saving your Memories

When you take all those great photos it is important to make sure that you don't lose them. This is where backing up your hard drive starts to play an important role. There are multiple ways to do this including external hard drives, flash/thumb drives, and cd/dvds. All of these have their advantages and draw backs. Let's start with hard drives. These are a great option as they hold a lot of information don't take a lot of room and are always accessible with nothing additional required from you. The price of these have come down a lot as well, you can pick up a basic 4TB drive from Target for around $100. You can also get drives that can be hooked into your router that allow you to be able to access it from any where via your smart phone or tablet.

Flash/thumb drives would be your next best option. They are small and a less expensive route and easy available and require no setup making them easy for anyone to use. The issue with these are you would need to plug and and plug these and being small they can be easy to lose. So with the use of these you would need to be sure that you have a safe place that you plane to keep them.

C/DVDs are the next option. These have been the traditional way to store photos for years. The biggest drawback to these is that they are easily scratched or broken which would result in the loss of everything on them. With these it is even more important to be sure you are storing them in a safe and protected manner.

Profesional photographers take this a step further and back up their photos to multiple drives and send them to different regions of the country for safe storage so if anything happened in any one place the images are still protected. An example of how I would do this is with storing with family sending drives to Oregon, Arizona, Tennessee, and having one here in Montana.

The pictures that I am including today or from a vacation to Oregon that were backed up to a hard drive. The computer that these were on died suddenly and everything on it was lost. So luckily I back things up. So protect your memories, go out make new ones and have fun.
